Just wanna point out how different Jiu looks from Insight 1 (main story and her character story before then) to her form at the end of the main story (Insight 2).

Her Insight 1 outfit is the clothing she got from her guardian Ms Xu. It’s not only a symbol of her humanity but her ties to the world as well, and something a Xiangrui shouldn’t have. Even down to her embroidered bag with poetry on it about her, it's something she doesn't quite understand despite being a direct part of it. The bag is FOR her and about her, but she can't read it. Being literate is one of the most important things when it comes to interacting with society and a part of education. She wants to know about Xiangrui's, but she already is one. She can't learn about other people like her because she can't read, she has no access to knowledge apart from stories that are retold a hundred times and changed even more. Every connection to her mother and why she fell from the heavens for Jiu are things that she can only learn from other people, but at the same time she doesn't know what she's looking for because her world view isn't big enough to know where to look. Much like the way she memorizes the poems on her bag without directly being able to read them, she's going with the motions in an attempt to understand humans in the way she has from the start.

"A Xiangrui is not supposed to have any personal feelings. She fell because of you, because of the personal feeling. Remember that."

Then her Insight 2 outfit is very clearly an arcanist in all senses of the word. Even by the standards of Pei City which accepts arcanists as simply another kind of person, Jiu then appears clearly nonhuman in the same way Getian does. Her character story CG shows the way no one looks to her as a Xiangrui as she looks to the narration (player/camera). Jiu has let go of her personal feelings and attachment to acting as a normal arcanist in her last attempt to fulfill her duties as a Xiangrui and reverse the curse, but in return she's lost the things that made her happy with humans. Things that she already had as a Xiangrui who granted the wishes of the people in town. One of the cruelest parts yet is that Xiangrui's are likely like Meimengs where they can't grant wishes but simply have the knowledge and strength to help others.

GETIAN who wants to impress you - and he does that by playing music to you.

➜﹒due to his bone wand, getian is able to play multiple instruments at a time. he conducts a beautiful orchestra of harps, lutes, and drums. the music is extremely clear and loud, but it is beautiful all the same. he wants to share his passion of music with his loved one, and is delighted when you show a positive response.

you have never heard something quite like this, and it was as if he had put you in an infinite trance. the music is carefully orchestrated, harmonizing together perfectly. you'd doubt you would break out of this reverie before the music had come to a stop, the initial quietness returning.

getian's attentive eyes look towards you, in search of finding a reaction of some sort ... and he was delighted seeing your face light up, the soft sound of applause resonating. he cracked a smile, one that was barely even noticeable -

"your music never fails to put me at ease." you spoke, in which he replies with a nod. "i will be sure to play for you more, then"

GETIAN who invites you to fly with him, especially late at night.

➜﹒the nighttime is a perfect time to stretch his wings and get some fresh air. whether or not you have wings like him, he will invite you to fly to the highest building to have the best view of the city (or the wilderness).

"hold on tight, and don't let go." he warned, the sheer pressure of being so high up making his voice barely audible. getian's talons held onto the hem of your clothing, careful not to hurt you, or to rip them - "i won't be able to catch you if you fall."

you reckon you flew a few miles, before he finally placed you down. he perched on the branch of a tree only a few feet away, stretching his wings out. here, you could see the whole city in its glory - the lights of the streets, slowly flickering as time passed.

once each light dimmed down, it was only the moon and its stars to accompany you. he will eventually fly you back down, but for now he does not need to say a thing - just admire the stars in a comfortable silence.

GETIAN who gifts you trinkets and jewelries he might've found in the wilderness; they can vary from high-value objects or literal trash, but you will love them nonetheless.

➜﹒ there will be short periods of time where getian is away, which he makes it up to you by gifting the things he found on his adventures. really, they're just shiny and peculiar objects that he found tossed around, but he managed to make something good out of them. (by giving them to you!)

"emm ... getian, what's this?" your expression, tinged with both mystification and amusement, didn't go unnoticed by the feathered man. "for you." he pushed the trinkets to you, as if urging you to take them.

"help yourself, i have no need for them." he raises his wing to his face, letting you take your pick. among them, there were valuable stones like jade and crystals ... but what caught your eye was a makeshift ring; a pull-tab from a used can of dr. papper, long thrown away by its user.

"i'll take this one."

Tristes tropiques: The worst chapter in Reverse 1999

Alright, so I’ve wanted to talk about ch8 of the main story since I’ve finished it because it’s, imo, the worst drop in writing quality we’ve seen in the game so far. It has a lot of inconsistencies, things that aren’t explained or happen off-screen, and the emotional segments are rushed/not impactful enough, and about characters we’ve barely seen (excluding Anjo Nala, who is the best part of the chapter imo). Now, as you can see, this will be quite a negative take, so if you liked this chapter, please don’t let me ruin your fun lol. Also, it’ll have spoilers, so be warned.

Part 1: The representation.

Alright, had to get this out of the way first because it’s what everyone is talking about. The representation.

Is the representation bad? Yes. Really, really bad if we compare it with literally all other stories in the game. To put things in perspective, imagine if in the Notes of Shuori event nothing changed but they clamed this was Japan instead of China, yet characters still spoke in Chinese, had Chinese names, and many of the references were Chinese. That would have been outrageous, wouldn’t it? Well, that’s basically what happened here but with Brazil and other Latin American countries.

What they tried to do, basically, was dump all of Latin America (you, know a region that’s bigger and more diverse than Europe) into one singular “culture” and put this in fictional Sao Paulo. Why do I say that? Because many of the words they use for different things are in Spanish, and many characters speak in Spanish, have Spanish-sounding names, and reference things from other countries in Latin America. Also, one of the npcs, whose name I don’t care to remember, is literally a walking Mexican stereotype. To me what this says is that they didn’t do any research at all about Brazil (for those of you who don’t know, they speak Portuguese and are also far enough away from Mexico that these two cultures aren’t really comparable); enough that they couldn’t get even the language right, or even the geography or the Sao Paulo landscape, judging by what I’ve seen being said by Brazilian players.

Remember when they accurately portrayed the Secession building in Vienna? Or Jantar Mantar in Mor Pank? Or how they usually have characters speak small phrases in their native language, which is appropriate to the region and their character? Well, Bluepoch doesn’t, apparently.

Then there’s the whole “life here is hell, this is hopeless and everything here sucks” aspect of their portrayal of Sao Paulo (and their infamous tweet). This feels especially disrespectful when the story so far has always had quite a good amount of nuance. Vienna for example, having the contrast of being the “city of freedom��, yet having such a strict oppression of arcanists. Or San Francisco, having such a huge poverty and gang problem, yet still portraying the people living in these conditions as actual humans with hopes and dreams that they sometimes were able to accomplish.

And finally, to wrap up this representation thing… it feels disrespectful that the only Brazilian character we get is Mr. Duncan. Mainly because it seems he’s not really Mr. Duncan, but actually Mr. Karson. You know, an English man. I think they should’ve made Lopera Brazilian because so far having her be from Colombia adds nothing to the story, and if she was from Sao Paulo it’d make a lot more sense for her to be Vertin’s guide/translator in the city.

Okay, so that’s what we get from the representation in this chapter, which is pretty bad (haven’t read Anjo’s character story, which I’ve heard is better in this aspect, but that’s not actually part of ch8, so I excluded it). However, honestly I wouldn’t mind that much if the story had at least been good. So… let’s talk about that next, shall we?

Part 2: The story.

The good.

Okay, first let’s get the good things out of the way, because I don’t want to sit here and pretend that everything about this chapter was bad; that would be unfair and disingenuous.

I liked Lopera and Molly. They were interesting characters and have a lot of potential for the future of the story, which I really hope they deliver in future chapters.

I liked White Rum; she’s a funny character, and the concept of an Awakened pirate ship that has the skeletal hand of her former captain (Anne Bonnie, my favorite pirate of all time) is quite an interesting and unique idea, and I wish we got more characters like this. Also, I need to see her interact with Regulus lol.

I absolutely adored Anjo Nala. She’s the highlight of the story for me; an interesting, complex, and adorable character with a lot of potential for stories to tell, both about her past and her future. I really became attached to her over the course of this story, and I think they did a good job making you care for her… in this specific chapter. Don’t look back at versions 2.0 and 2.1 if you don’t want to get your fun ruined, because consistency is something they didn’t care about at all while writing this patch. And that brings us to…

The bad.

Buckle up my friends because what’s bad about this chapter is really, really, REALLY bad. Consistency is something they don’t believe in anymore, retcons are on the market, and setting up characters/settings/relationships is a thing of the past.

Does it sound like I’m being too harsh? Maybe, but it’s deserved, so idc.

Let’s start from the least bad, shall we? Anjo Nala’s hunger. In 2.0 and 2.1, as well as the first of Anjo’s monologues (the things you unlock after getting traces of a specific character), it’s implied that she can’t eat human food. Not that she doesn’t find it satisfactory, or that she doesn’t like it. It’s heavily implied she literally can’t eat it.

But then she steals some bread and Vertin gives her chocolate, and she eats both, so… what’s up with that? Also, they never really explain what her hunger is for. Was it really just normal human food? Or something else? In her trailer (which btw I wouldn’t consider it part of the main story because it’s a freaking trailer, but whatever) she “feeds on someone’s love” by using her tail. Okay, but then that person turns into a “walking corpse”. Does she have to do that every time she’s hungry? What happens if she doesn’t? Is human food substitute enough? The game never answers these questions, which is a mistake because this whole thing is a central part of Anjo’s character, as well as her turning from her bloodthirsty self to the Anjo we meet in this chapter.

And this brings us to my second issue… the inconsistency of Anjo’s character with the two events we had before this patch. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying anything she ever did was her fault since she was simply a slave following orders, and one thing that is consistent about her character is that she doesn’t like when people do give her orders. However, what really annoys me is how in 2.0 she was very bloodthirsty. Sure, she didn’t know J and his gang, and she had done these types of jobs before, but imo it would’ve been more consistent with the other patches if she was indifferent about killing them, rather than excited. 2.1 was slightly more consistent with ch8 when it comes to Anjo’s character, but it’s kind of implied it was all an act, and her “real” personality was that of 2.0.

Now, I’ve seen some ppl explain this as “well, in a wilderness interaction she says she acts however her master prefers her to”. Okay, but why put such important information in a freaking wilderness interaction and not in the main story??? You can’t even see those unless you have the character, and seeing as Anjo is limited, not everyone will have her. This is a fact.

Another problem I have with Anjo (this is the last, I promise) is that we’re not introduced to her again in ch8, which surely is a decision. Why? Because 2.0 and 2.1 aren’t part of the main story; they’re side events, which are time-limited and, at the moment, not available in-game. This is a problem because anyone who didn’t play those events for one reason or another will be very confused by Anjo Nala and how Vertin reacts to her. It would’ve been better if we were introduced to her from the pov of Lopera, for example, when she raided the Manus base and captured her. And then we could have Vertin run into her on the ship and explain to Sotheby (with a little more detail than what we got) that she actually met her before.

I’m just saying, this isn’t the first time we got a character in a main chapter that had been previously introduced only in an event (Marta/Bessmert), but in that case, if you missed the event, you could still fully enjoy the main chapter, because you wouldn’t even know that you were missing information. That’s not the case here.

And speaking of Urd… okay, let’s talk about how little sense it makes for the Foundation to want to find her in this chapter. In ch5 Vertin and her team found a suspicious radio that talked about a travel note about Aperion written by someone named “Urd”. In this case it makes sense for them to want to investigate, since the base Ms. Radio was in had things that belonged to the Manus, and they found some Manus followers there as well. Even after ch5 and everything that happened, it still makes sense for Vertin to want to keep looking for Urd because now she has the suspicion, based on what 6 said, that Urd is her mother.

However, although it makes sense for Vertin to want to find Urd, it doesn’t make sense for the freaking Foundation to want to find some random UTTU editor. Because that’s really all Urd is, isn’t she? She’s not the head of UTTU (that’d be Pandora), and the fact that she can traverse the storm, which is the only reason we’re given in ch8, is shared among all UTTU editors, as we learn from Barbara.

But even if we assume the Foundation wants to know how UTTU keeps its editors safe… first of all, why? We already have the equilibrium umbrellas, don’t we? We spent a whole chapter seeing their creation, and even saw ppl die for this cause. Why would they need yet another method for surviving the storm? If they instead suspected UTTU to be involved with the Manus somehow, and that’s how they’re traversing the storm, then at least give us that!

Furthermore, the Foundation already knew where she was! They were the ones who gave her the white marble chair with a button! If they just wanted to speak with her, surely a simply call would’ve sufficed? Why send Vertin?

And that’s another thing! Constantine knows Vertin’s mom, and I'm sure she’s not the only one in the Foundation who does, yet the Foundation tried to cover it up and tell Vertin that she doesn’t have a mother. Clearly they have some motivation for keeping it hidden, right? Then… why send Vertin specifically to search for Urd? Why not send some other random investigator, preferentially one with experience finding ppl? Why Vertin???

If Vertin had gone out of her own will, like in ch5, I’d have no problem with this, but no; the Foundation sent her this time. And I just can’t bring myself to understand why.

Maybe if Urd isn’t Vertin’s mom, that would explain this, but for now this makes no sense at all.

Next I want to talk about Lopera and Molly’s relationship. I said before that I truly liked their characters and their relationship, which is true, but… I wish it had been better stablished. Why? Because we had only had one, one single scene, of them together and the suddenly there was a grand betrayal and we’re supposed to feel bad for Lopera? Lmao.

If I felt slightly bad for Lopera it was because of the voice acting, the music and the art. I can assure you, not one single ounce of those feelings came from the actual story being told. It’s even worse when it comes to Igor because he barely exchanged words with Lopera, and all we know from their relationship comes from Lopera telling us “he’s better than my biological father”. And let’s not talk about Ptoleme. He literally only appeared to be a jerk for like five minutes and neither Molly nor Lopera seem to care much about him. How are we supposed to care about that entire family? They really don’t feel like a family at all (except for Lopera and Molly, but even then, it’s the bare minimum this chapter could do with this concept).

It would’ve been so much better if we had this whole chapter to stablish Lopera’s relationship with her adoptive family, with Zeno, the veterans and the Sao Paulo community, and then in the next chapter we could have the big betrayal be more impactful. But here? We barely spent any time with these characters!

And then we have the actual betrayal scene, which is… nonsensical. At best.

What happened in it? Molly arrived at the Colonel’s manor with her squad of Zeno soldiers and attacked the few Apostles Brotherhood ppl that remained, then says she’s glad that Lopera was able to rescue Dr. Dores and that they should all go back to the base. None of this is suspicious, imo, because Vertin had already told Lopera that she was going to call Zeno for reinforcements, specifically to assist with the rescue of Dr. Dores. It’s true that Molly hesitates a little when Lopera asks “what about the timekeeper?”, and that she dismisses Lopera’s concerns about evacuating Sao Paulo, but imo this shouldn’t be enough for Lopera to be so suspicious of her freaking sister. Also, why ask “who’s waiting for you in Tierra del Fuego”? Why would Lopera every think this was anything other than a mission from Zeno???

Sure, they didn’t tell her about it, but also she’s been gone from the base for a couple of days and she knows there’s been traitors and rebels. A lot could’ve changed in that time. Even if she didn’t want to leave because she got attached to Sao Paulo, I think it’s weird that she immediately was so confrontational about it, especially with her sister, who famously just follows their father’s orders without questions.

This could’ve worked if Lopera was already suspicious of her family beforehand, or maybe even of Zeno’s higher ups, or if Molly and her squad had just waltzed in without attacking the Manus or being attacked by them. But that’s not what happened. Also, if she really was suspicious, why not go back to the base and question Igor about this whole thing like Molly suggested? I don’t see why she immediately would think base=bad when her whole family and the army she’s part of is currently at the base.

Like, I get she already had trauma because of her biological father being a jerk, but that situation doesn’t seem to have anything to do with this one imo. All in all, what I’m saying is that the bad writing of this scene lessens the emotional impact.

And it’s not the only emotional scene that’s affected by the blatant bad writing in this chapter. No, that “honor” goes to the scene the trailer for this patch opens with; Anjo being ordered to kill Vertin by Ptoleme.

Okay, so as a refresher, Igor requests that his son, Ptoleme, is sent to the base because “he can only trust in his children because they always obey him”. Okay, so then what does Ptoleme do when ordered to bring back Kimberly, preferentially without a fuss? Of course, cause the biggest scene imaginable, which leads to Kimberly being freed.

Now, I wouldn’t be so harsh on him if his actions were reasonable but due to circumstances led to an unfavorable outcome for him, but that’s not what happened. Okay, he ordered Anjo to kill Vertin. Whatever, he’s a sadistic asshole, but this at least kinda makes sense. What makes no sense whatsoever is that he not only gave Vertin a gun because “he won’t shoot an unarmed civilian” (why does he care? Also ultimately he orders Anjo to kill her, so he wouldn’t have shot an unarmed civilian anyways), but also that he kept trying to make Vertin shoot Anjo.

Why? Just why? There was no reason for him to want Vertin to kill Anjo. None at all. And if what he wanted was to convince Anjo to kill Vertin… he can’t play both the “I’ll free you if you kill her” and the “Vertin, kill her, she’s a monster” cards at the same time. It makes him look like a pathetic moron with no sense of reality whatsoever, and in retrospective makes Igor look like a bigger idiot who doesn’t know his children at all. I think the reason they did this is because they wanted to replicate the infamous orange scene from ch2, but without all the logic, lore and emotional impact behind it, just hoping players would feel emotions by association.

And finally, we come to my biggest complain about this chapter: the retcon about how the storm works. Because yes, it is a retcon. Why do I say that? Mainly based on ch6.

In ch6 we learn that Heinrich, in 1912, left Vienna to study at Berlin. There, he met the Manus and joined them, surviving that storm, and subsequent ones, until time returned to 1913 and he went back to Vienna, reuniting with his old friends and telling them about the storm.

Now, how is this relevant? Well, from Heinrich’s story we learned two things; 1) you can indeed see again someone who was once reversed by the storm, but only if time ever goes back to that era, and 2) The fact that his friends recognized him and he recognized his friends, and his friends’ existence was consistent even though the storm had once reversed them. You see where I’m going with this, don’t you?

At the end of ch8, Vertin says “the storm doesn’t kill ppl, at least not physically”. Okay Vertin, did you have a lobotomy between chapters? The storm has never killed ppl; it’s just the end of an era, remember? It reverses time! It’s in the freaking name! The scariest part about the storm isn’t the storm itself, but the storm syndrome, which is when most casualties seem to happen. Sure, the storm sucked for Vertin because she kept traversing eras and losing the friends she made in them, but those friends remained anchored in their own time (perhaps with the exception of ppl who had already crossed the storm at least once, like The Ring and Isabella, but I digress).

My point is, that I really don’t like where this retcon is headed, but I do hope they somehow fix it in the future, either by making it clear that not everyone who gets reversed is reincarnated and there’s very strict conditions that should be met (like having knowledge about the storm, for example), or this hypothesis is wrong and the storm isn’t actually making ppl reincarnate.

One reason I especially don’t like this new reincarnation thing is that… Mr. Duncan isn’t Mr. Karson. Let’s not lie to ourselves. He looks nothing like Mr. Karson (and I wish the game would stop gaslighting me), doesn’t act like Mr. Karson, doesn’t speak like Mr. Karson, and doesn’t even have the same nationality as him! The only things that are similar about them is that they’re both old war veterans who once had a dog and now have a soft spot for young ladies. And if this is the approach they’ll use to bring back characters in the future… thanks, but I’d rather they stayed reversed.

Think about it! Will they next say that Anjo is Schneider? They look similar enough (more similar than Duncan and Karson, that’s for sure!), both were antagonists that joined the manus for reasons beyond their control, both had a fight with Vertin in which they almost got killed, and both have a snake bracelet on their left arm. Surely that’s enough to say they’re one and the same, according to this logic!

My point is that using such simple similarities, they can literally invent any new character they want and then say “this is actually this other character, who was once reversed by the storm”, regardless of if they’re actually similar at all, and I don’t think that people who wanted them to bring back Schneider or Marian, or Mr. Karson, or 888, or literally anyone, wanted them to be brought back like this.

a short patch timeline on reverse 1999

So I've been going back and forth for almost a year now on comprehending and helping people comprehend the timeline in Reverse: 1999 because oh my god, it's so, so convoluted that it's still taking a long time for me to even write down the information without overexplaining it. And that's just the main story.

However, I've been able to piece together the timeline events by patch and chapter to make things easier for everyone. (...unless you want me to even include the anecdotes, which is another can of worms I'd like to not open.)

However, since 2.0 forwards will be taking place after 1.9, I won't be including the patch names. But, I will put their placements in the timeline without making specific notes to avoid spoilers.

I'd like to first note that 1.6 (Notes on Shuori) has no definite placement on the timeline. The reason why is that 1.6 is personally considered a timeline anomaly; there are plot holes and information that made it difficult to deduce when it took place. (i.e. Yenisei's origins, Getian's character story, Bessmert's* presence) For now, I will leave this out.

Additionally, a lot of the character stories take place between the past and the future. Thus, the character story that chronologically takes place the earliest by far is Lucy's while the latest would be Ezra's.

First of all, we start with 1.8 (Farewell, Rayashki) in its entirety. From Windsong's past, to her arrival in Rayashki, to when the second "Storm" took place, and Vila and the kids needed to adjust to this new normal.

Next is Chapter 3 (Nouvelles et Textes pour Rien) and Chapter 5's interchapter. (The Star) Both the story of Vertin's becoming of the Timekeeper, and Greta Hofmann's experience with the Apeiron group are both aligned. Greta even mentions Vertin in her log after returning to the Foundation.

Afterwards we skip to 4 years later, and we're now in 1966. (Post First "Storm") Three events occur here. First, 1.1, (Theft of the Rimet Cup) then 1.3, (Journey to Mor Pankh) and then finally, the Prologue of our story. (This is Tomorrow)

Its then quite straightforward afterwards. We immediately follow up with the first 4 Chapters taking us through 1929 to late 1913. Then afterwards, we have Chapters 5-7 taking place within the first 3 weeks of January 1914, and then we're immediately taken to August 1990 at the end of Chapter 7.

I'd like to also add that within those 3 chapters, both rougelikes (Echoes in the Mountains and Series of Dusks) took place within the same time. Although, Series of Dusks ends before Chapter 7 due to Semmelweis and Lorelei leaving with the Foundation right before the "Storm" hit.

Now, in 1990, we start with 1.2 (Nightmare at Green Lake) followed by patches 2.0-2.2, all of which take place in immediate succession. And then for now, we end with 1.5. (Revival! Of the Uluru Games)

So if I put all of these in one list, it looks like this:

─────❅───── 𓅪 Meeting you for the first time wasn’t special, he’s used to seeing humans, however, the only difference is that it seems that the birds chirp whenever you’re around, especially Maya birds, they are always on your shoulders while you feed them.

𓅪 He knows that most birds are afraid of humans, so what makes you different? Was it because of the food you’re holding? Even if you didn’t have it, they still flock on you. He has seen you in the village, you were the woman who gave shelter to them, maybe that’s the reason?

𓅪 Ge Tian was deep in thought as he observed you; you wouldn't notice him staring at you from atop a tree, preening his wings.

𓅪 You’d only notice his presence when one of his feathers falls on your face. Grasping the quill-like feather, you’d look up and gasp in awe—a birdman perched in the tree. He was so pretty!

𓅪 Ge Tian would stop preening as you wave enthusiastically at him. With a sigh, he flies down, his talons scraping the dirt as he looms over you. He's pretty tall, and his wings made him bigger than the average man. the birds weren’t alerted by his sudden jump, causing you to not follow your instincts to jump away from him.

𓅪 “Oh my gosh” you squealed, your hand twitching to touch his head, Ge tian, who instinctively lowered his head for you to pet him, it was an unconscious decision! Something he would be surprised that he did. Once you start petting him, he’ll let out a few chirps.

𓅪 Now that he got closer to you, he understood why the birds are attracted to you. You know how to handle a bird, his talons scraping the ground as he chirps louder out of satisfaction because of your hands knowing where to pet him.

𓅪 Conversely, you continued petting him, your thumb rubbing his chin like a cat. He seemed to enjoy it, so you persisted, noticing that while he was half-bird, his skin felt firm, much like a human's.

��� "You," he pulls away, breaking the comforting trance, his eyes narrowing as he covers his face with his wing. "How do you do this? Did you use some kind of arcanist skill on me?" It was a bold accusation, but you just smiled at him. "I didn't. I'm human," you added, unable to tear your eyes away from him.

𓅪 "This is the first time I've seen you though. What's your name? Oh, and are you the bird man who's been flying around the village?" You were asking multiple questions, causing him to shake his head. While he didn't despise those types of humans, he sometimes got overwhelmed with the questions. “I’m Ge tian, and I apologize if my flight has been disrupting your peace. I was simply guarding the village” he said as his bone floats around him. “Would you let me read your bones?”

𓅪 "Bones?” you asked, initially confused but then relaxing as you grasped the situation, birds are often very wary of each other, this is likely the case with Ge tian. “Yeah sure, by reading bones, do you mean like reading my future?” you asked further, he nodded at your question as his arcane skill activated, his bone wand going closer to you making you grab it. Ge Tian’s expression went from relaxed to confusion.

𓅪 "What?" he blurted out, prompting you to glance at him with concern. "What is it? Is something wrong?" you asked, releasing your grip on the bone wand as he unfurled his wings, casually securing it back onto his hip. "No, it's just... peculiar," he replied, his tone tinged with curiosity.

𓅪 Your bones told him that you were someone who was going to be extremely important to Yan Ping. While he wouldn’t mind that, your bones seemed to be closely connected to him more than just mere acquaintances.

𓅪 “What did you see?” you pushed further due to curiosity while going closer to him.  As you approached, some of the birds perched on your shoulders fluttered over to his head, happily chirping and beginning to nestle into his hair. Yan Ping didn't seem to mind, which made you chuckle softly.

𓅪 “What is funny?” he asked, causing you to quiet down. 'It's just that the birds seem to really like you. It's uncommon for them to be so friendly to other bird species."

𓅪 Ge tian finally noticing how his hair was messed up, he shook his head, causing the birds to fly going back to your shoulders. “Your pets are very lively” he frowns, lowering his head to fix his hair.

𓅪 "Sorry about that," you chuckle softly. As the wind tousles Ge Tian's hair, he gazes into your eyes, a sense of inexplicable connection washing over him. It feels as though he's known you for years as if you're both old friends and new acquaintances at once. Though he introduced himself with an alias initially, he now finds himself preferring that you use his real name.

𓅪 “While Ge tian is my alias, you can call me Yan ping instead” he muttered, he used his real name to you, and not the one he often had people call him for. He knew changing the shape of his own bones would be painful, and it’s not something he wanted to do, so as his friend would say, he will “Go with the flow”

𓅪 If you truly are someone that he was anticipating, or at least someone he would consider as his “mate” then he won’t push you away.

𓅪 You didn’t push him away either, you were close to him. Often, you’d come visit him up in the mountains despite it being a long hike from down the village to the mountains, at some point he started feeling bad for you, so he decided to fly down instead.

𓅪 The moment you saw a familiar shadow of wings, you looked up to see him perched on the lamppost. “Yan ping!” you chirped, he smiled slightly, it seemed like being around your birds, you started to adapt their mannerism as you jumped to wave at him, he starts to fly down back wrapping his wings around you and pulling you close to a hug. “Good morning,” he says softly.

𓅪 You were surprised but you wrapped your arms around his neck hugging him back, “Good morning!”

𓅪 It took a while for you to break the barrier between you two, although you didn’t anticipate yourself to be a close friend of the bird man, the one that was rumored by many as either a kidnapper, which was debunked sure, but some people still blame him for Jiu Niangzi’s sacrifice. It’s part of human nature, to find an object or person to blame a scenario like that. You were worried at first if Ge Tian would let it affect him, but so far, he’s only been helping you care for the birds, telling you what their chirps meant while also taking them out to fly once in a while.

𓅪 He started to look like a father to your feathered friends, and you as the mother.

𓅪 You started pacing around your house, suddenly realizing that your pets might be starting to see you two as a couple. Ge Tian would always blush faintly when he talked to them, and you'd often find yourself asking what they were saying.

𓅪 "They said we'd make great mates," he answered, ruffling his feathers. You had thought it meant you two would make good parents, so you happily hugged him, petting his head. "Of course we are!"

𓅪 You didn’t think of it that it meant couples!

𓅪 On the other hand, Ge Tian knew you were oblivious to the words he casually threw around. He himself didn't view romantic relationships as easy; he lacked experience in that area, and it never crossed his mind. Yes, he was also aware that the birds started to "ship" you two together because you both cared for them, but he found it more adorable than attributing any deeper meaning to it.

𓅪 He’s not the kind of man to make the first move either he watches closely and observes you, he wants you to get comfortable with him first and be acquainted with him. Rushing things is not his style.

𓅪 He lived for thousands of years; he stayed in his home for years without trying to fly out of his nest so prolonging his pining over you is child’s play.

𓅪 Though he does occasionally cuddle you, rubbing his cheek on yours while preening his wings and giving you the plucked-out feathers that he ruffled off. Whenever you ask what it was for, he’d bluntly say “It can serve as your pen” a quill pen.

𓅪 Today, he took the little birds out for a flight, letting them rest on his back if they couldn't keep up or grew tired.

"Have you asked mom to be with you yet?" one of the maya birds chirped, making him glance upward as he flew. "No, we both understand it's best not to pressure her into a relationship.”

𓅪 The maya bird just chirps, sounding like it was huffing. “Patience, child” he said with a smile as he made a roundabout. They had been flying for an hour now, and he knew he needed to have the little birds back before dusk to avoid causing you anxiety.

 

𓅪 As he began his descent toward your roof, he noticed you biting your nail, an unhealthy habit you'd picked up. "What's wrong?" he asked as you looked up at him.

 

𓅪 "Yan Ping," you called out as he flew down, your birds descending with him. "Hey, we need to talk," you said as he blinked at you, his expression almost owlish.

𓅪 “Okay” he nods as he makes a few chirps to the birds who immediately understood what he said, they all went back to their little houses leaving you and Ge Tian alone.

𓅪 "Is something wrong?" he asked, though his tone remained calm, he couldn't help but feel concerned about what you were going to say.

𓅪 "Do you think we're dating?" you asked, but he seemed puzzled, tilting his head. "Dating?"

𓅪 This poor old bird, “I mean!” you scratch the back of your neck as you feel embarrassed even talking about it. “Do you think we’re mates?”

𓅪 Ge Tian fell silent as he gazed down at you, gently using his wing to stroke your head, giving you a faint smile. "Although your bones indicate that you are my mate, I have no intention of imposing that upon you," he said, withdrawing his wing. "You are someone I cherish deeply and wish to protect."

𓅪 And that was it, that was all he could say, he didn’t specifically deny the idea, but he was open to it, noticing your flushed cheeks though made him happy.

𓅪 “You never told me I was supposed to be your lover” you huffed, holding the tip of his wing. “Are you sure that’s what my bones said?”

𓅪 “I am certain” he reciprocates the affectionate gesture with a nuzzle on your head, walking closer to you as he wraps you in his winged embrace. “I am not one to lie about readings of the past, present, and the future”

𓅪 “Still! You never told me!” you pouted further, hugging him back by the wings as you gently preen it with your fingers, he found it comforting since sometimes, cleaning his own feathers takes a while to do, your hands were skilled with it. “You never asked, I wouldn’t be the one to talk about such things.”

𓅪 Despite being clueless about romantic relationships, Ge Tian is certainly the type of lover who would be gentle, he’s not the best boyfriend for sure, but his wisdom helps him understand how to make you happy, it’s easy for him to adjust to your liking if it’s something new to him.

I think I change my answer every time I think about this but since we have a better idea of Vertin's habits I'm going to see if I can conjure an actual answer (although I do love making her a gremlin)

"Hangover" Theory

Vertin takes naps as evidenced by her interaction with Ms. Radio at the end of Notes of Shuori. There are many lines pointing to Vertin being a night owl as well as her own lines from the beginning of the game with Regulus. She's up late all the time.

Poltergeist mentions Vertin mumbles in her sleep too. It seems like when she does try to sleep properly at night, it's not a peaceful rest. It sounds like Vertin has nightmares and also trouble falling asleep in the first place at night. Tooth Fairy offers lullabies, Yenisei offers advice to help her, and other members are aware she's awake and seek her out.

However, we see she also ends up working lots of overtime. If she's not doing official work, then she is busy getting pulled into her crew members antics or checking up on them.

I think the Picrasma candy helps Vertin get through the day. Instead of a rush, it looks like she's functioning "normally." But what if she eats too much?

Hangover.

The key ingredients of Picrasma candy are cane sugar, Picrasma plant, and alcohol!

That could be where the naps come from too. She crashes hard due to pushing her body past its limits and that's why her crew finds her napping at random times. Another thing to note is the her confusion and disorientation when she woke up from her long nap during Notes of Shuori. She's very out of it, which sort of aligns with the hangover theory.

If she already has a sleep deficit/poor quality sleep, she's more likely to experience symptoms of a hangover too. It's an unhealthy cycle.

We see that her crew takes good care of her! I think Vertin's sleep issues are well-known, but the potential Picrasma Candy dependency is not something their privy to yet. They Vertin eats a lot of candy, but that's where it ends.

Now if they DO find out the cause, that may change things.

However, the candy isn't the root of the problem. Vertin's packed schedule, responsibilities, and insomnia/restless sleep are.

Well, this is a dark answer to a silly and light-hearted question. I'm sorry vertiir, the game do be torturing Vertin for funsies 💀

On the bright side, maybe some of the other arcanists decide to join her for a nap and their presence keeps the nightmares away! We will find a silver lining somewhere!

Happy 1.5 Anniversary!!!

I want to draw something to celebrate and I’ve only just finished this today 😆🎉

Some thoughts below:

To start with, I want to convey good memories, how R99 stories have accompanied me so far. And since the current patch is related to movie, I make the bottom part like a film reel. 🎬🎞️

🎥 Reel #0

Team Timekeeper! Or at least, some of the main casts in our team! Vertin, Sonetto, Lilya, Regulus, Sotheby, Druvis III, Matilda, X, MedPoc... I would draw more, but this is getting too crowded as is.

What attracted me to R99 is how gorgeous the art style is. Every character is different, with their own personality and point of view, their diverse skills. One day, I would like to max the level (and resonance?) of each and every characters. That’s a far off dream, perhaps, but slowly, slowly, I’m sure.

🎥 Reel #1

One of the first impactful memories from when I started playing R99 was Schneider. Her soft voice calling out to Vertin. She’s very beautiful in red. Even when she’s rather small, she has such might inside herself, she’s brilliant.

In the early chapters, Arcana and Forget-Me-Not made great antagonists. Miss Arcana’s piercing yellow eyes. Forget-Me-Not’s grand piano that he played in the midst of incoming Storm. R99 early stories are interesting, I have replayed them many times because I want to understand the storyline.

The reason I started playing R99 is Pickles! I remembered looking through social media and saw Pickles, a six-star non-human character. First of all, this game has six-star? I was relatively new to gacha games and I thought five-star was the norm for the highest tier, so I was intrigued. So I downloaded the game and got Pickles. He’s the bestest boy.

On that note, this patch was the first event story that I experienced. As I didn’t have many characters and most were not levelled up, I remembered struggling in the fighting stages. Later, not-so-recently, when the Rimet Cup story was re-released again, I attempted those stages again and I’m really happy that I can now passed them easily!

Now, the Note on Shuori was particularly memorable for me. I learned about how there’s a true-limited character in this game, and so I pulled for Jiu Niangzi. But Getian—

Getian was the first character that I pulled based on looks alone. He’s very (very, very) beautiful, I love his eyes, the sharp eyelashes, the texture of the strands of his hair, his range of emotions (I love his pouting face UuU), his wings, how it shines, the individual feathers that you can admire in green, blue, stripes of white, and dark shades.

When this story first came out, I remembered how I did not understand what was happening 😂 The story used many different terms that I’m unfamiliar with and the plot twist confused me so much. I reread the story again just last week and I can safely say I understand the story now (lol) When you didn’t know what the characters are capable of, the story is very confusing imo

Apeiron gang my beloved! When the story patch first came out, I wasn’t really into 6 (surprisingly? hahah) The story was meant to make 37 shine the most and she does. She shines very bright. I really love the sparkle in her eyes.

It’s not until recently that I’m really into Apeiron found family. I like their banters, their connection to each other. They hold a special place in my heart.

Vereinsamt. The pain. I want to include Lucy as well, but she’s a little out of place in the middle of Vienna, so I decided on drawing Marcus, Kakania, and Isolde only.

Marcus and her sachertorte. I love Marcus’ design! Her sailor-like clothes and books, the lantern she holds. She’s a dear.

This story has so many details, the different pov telling the struggles in different places. Not just Marcus, Kakania and Isolde, everyone in Laplace and Apeiron. It's a deep story that tells a lot. This patch is the one that pulled me into the fandom for real.

For the last panel, I debated between drawing Tristes Tropiques or the current Show Down in Chinatown. But I decided on this one in the end.

First of all, I love White Rum! To have great non-human characters are amazing, it’s one of R99’s best points imo. I always love sea-related stuff so White Rum has truly hooked me since first glance.

And of course, there’s Lopera, Anjo Nala, Mr. Duncan, and everyone else that formed the story. This patch has great battle music.

I can’t draw all the characters, there are just too many! R99 has great art and each character is unique.

Lastly, I’m looking forward to what the future story will bring! Thank you so much for the many memories, happy 1.5 anniversary! 💙

Actor AU:

Getian's bird legs, and wings are CGI, but he wears props, to make it easier for the CGI animation staff, and for the interactions with the other actors, the scenery and props. (I don't know if there was a similar post or not)

I prepose the idea that he wore stilts for the legs. Such as these.

Imagine the bloopers.

Yes!! His body is definitely CGI, but I hadn't thought about the stilts.

He had to have training before even appearing on a scene because he would have trouble walking, and at the beginning, some of his scenes were made separately from the other actors, such as his first apparition.

"They're a bit... Not human shaped and long, it took me a while to get used to it"

The hardest scenes to film were those in the trees, when he had to perch like a bird on anything, it would make him lose his balance and fall. He didn't obtain any major injuries of course, and even he ended up laughing a couple times.

Posing for photos on top of trees and buildings with those stilts was a big pain in the ass. But after that experience, he was successfully able to walk with those. Shame it took him half of the movie to manage it to perfection.

Yenisei: Mr. Getian, can you climb down from that branch?

Getian: Oh, you can catch me? (Misheard)

ONION: and that's how two of the biggest actors on Notes on Shuori ended up in the hospital, no major injuries were acquired.

on minor parsing of the reverse 1999 timeline: where do events fall?

disclaimer: this post is not meant to provide a decoded in-game timeline. its purpose is to sow discussion about how to make sense of it.

minor spoilers up to 1.9 vereinsamt, and mention of versions 2.0-2.2

months ago when 1.4 prisoner in the cave (Ch5) was released in CN, a user posted her findings of the game's timeline based on the IDM in 37's lab and greta's account in the star. you can find the post here. the scope of her findings was limited to the main story and makes sense. although the theorised timeline only goes up to Ch5, we can easily extend the timeline to include the story up until the storm in Ch7, since the progression from prisoner in the cave -> vereinsamt is linear.

QUERY: where have previous non-main events fallen into this timeline?

the official re1999 account posted earlier today some images of a laplace forum board, and two things stuck out to me:

these two comments. one of them is likely windsong, based on the ID end letter 'W' and her ley line device. the other is (likely) mesmer jr's account, and here she mentions 'researcher ezra.' before talking about windsong, lets clear things up a bit with ezra.

in uluru games, vertin already has a sizeable team, such as bringing regulus, darley, la source, and click when the uluru crew first set foot in the stadium. having regulus around means the event definitely happened after Ch0-4 i.e., regulus recruited, team timekeeper is established. but did it happen between Ch4 and Ch5? not necessarily. although we know the storm has a physical radius, nothing is proven yet on which storms had affected australia. besides, ezra seems to have already been an established member of laplace by the time of the event. so, when uluru games happened is still up for discussion.

with windsong, however, one thing is certain: farewell rayashki happened before the main story. a few points infer to this:

all of farewell rayashki (1.8) happened, and THEN windsong was recruited by lucy to join laplace. this means lucy hadnt resigned.

the radio broadcast at the beginning of the event tells of a storm syndrome that turns people's insides into electrical wires. this syndrome doesnt match any storm directly in the main story (comic book explosions in 1966, money = food in 1929, oil paintings in 1914, people turning into blocks during vertin's breakaway incident; this was 1987, per the previous linked post). this might match, however, with greta's account of the storm in the star.

that's all fine and dandy, and windsong's presence in the laplace forum (which happens AFTER vereinsamt, as the forum discusses a charging station in vertin's suitcase to accommodate lucy) means the timeline is still fairly consistent. but what about the other events?

notes on shuori: no clue on this one... the one lead to maybe making sense of the timeline is yenisei, as it's implied she meets the timekeeper at the end of the event. the status of pei city and the storm is a different topic entirely, as well.

after having finished vereinsamt, im quite excited to see where the story is headed next. although arcana is seemingly out of the picture, the manus still exist. what little i could garner with versions 2.0-2.2, without much spoilers, is the active presence of manus vindictae (or at least, one member) through characters like ms kimberly and ms grace. with anjo nala being a major character in Ch8 tristes tropiques, this might mean events 2.0 and 2.1 happen between Ch7 and Ch8. everything else, i have yet to know, however.

I don't think I will. I think there are YT channels already that have achieved in archiving narrator trails in the playthrough with no commentary. Some channels in mind are:

Reverse 1999 Archive (unfortunately I think they stopped, but they had events covered until Notes on Shuori)

Reverse: 1999 Timekeeper (records absolutely everything - GOATED)

I think this way of archiving dialogue is most efficient besides wikis. I don't think it's efficient to archive it via tumblr. I only archive media, and my PC unfortunately is too ancient to handle lengthy screen recordings for youtube uploads. Hahahaha!

Perhaps I would be more inclined in archiving poems, essays and songs from the story stages and three doors. But otherwise, I think the youtube channels above have done a great job and is worth checking!
